Updated 11:30am, Wednesday December 31: A woman is in hospital with serious injuries after a head-on crash on the Lyell Highway left five people hospitalised and closed the road for six hours.
Emergency services were called to Granton, north of Hobart, around 4:12pm on Tuesday after a silver Ford Falcon utility and blue Honda Jazz collided.
The 30-year-old woman driving the Honda was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious injuries.
Two passengers in the Honda and both occupants of the Ford were also transported to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Tasmania Police said preliminary investigations indicated one of the vehicles veered out of its lane before the collision.
The impact left the Honda overturned in the middle of the highway and the Ford off the road.
A third vehicle, a white Nissan Leaf, was caught up in a secondary impact at the scene.
Its driver escaped injury, police said.
The Lyell Highway, a key route connecting Hobart to the West Coast, was closed for about six hours while crash investigators examined the scene.
Police have appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
Anyone who can assist should contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Earlier: Emergency services are working to free a trapped motorist after a serious multi-vehicle collision on the Lyell Highway where one car has rolled onto its roof.
The crash has completely blocked the road, just west of Granton, with authorities warning motorists the closure will remain in place for “some time”.
All traffic between New Norfolk and surrounding areas is being diverted to Boyer Road while emergency crews continue their rescue and recovery operations at the scene.
Tasmania Police say the three-vehicle crash occurred in the vicinity of Murphys Flat.
