Burnie substation fault knocks out power to more than 8,000 homes and businesses

More than 8,000 homes and businesses across Tasmania’s north-west have lost power after a fault at the Burnie substation.

TasNetworks confirmed about 8,045 customers were affected across several outages on Tuesday morning, all understood to be traced back to the same substation.

The outages stretch from Wynyard in the west to Penguin in the east and inland to Ridgley and Yolla.

The largest hit 2,261 customers across Burnie, South Burnie, Upper Burnie, Acton, Brooklyn, Hillcrest, Montello and Romaine.

A second cut power to 1,621 customers around Burnie, Wynyard, Somerset and Cooee, while 1,413 were blacked out around Penguin, Riana and Sulphur Creek.

Another 1,021 customers lost power across Wynyard, Yolla and Ridgley, with smaller outages affecting hundreds more customers across Burnie.

TasNetworks said crews were working to diagnose the fault.

“We’re investigating a problem at the Burnie substation and will restore power as soon as possible,” the company said in a statement.

No restoration time has been confirmed, with customers asked to check back after 1pm.

The company also flagged website issues as residents rushed to track the outage.

“We understand heavy volumes may also be causing some problems/delays accessing our website,” it said.
