A bushfire is heading towards Breadalbane, south of Launceston, with heavy smoke cutting visibility on the Midland Highway.
The Tasmania Fire Service issued a Watch and Act alert for the area on Monday, urging residents to act now rather than wait.
“The fire is travelling towards Breadalbane and surrounds,” the service said.
“Heavy smoke is impacting the Midlands Highway at Breadalbane and visibility is significantly reduced.”

Crews are on the ground, but conditions are shifting.
The service warned embers could land ahead of the main fire front and reach homes before the flames arrive.

“Embers, smoke and ash may fall on Breadalbane and surrounds and threaten you and your home before the main fire,” it said.
Residents have been told to check their bushfire plans and decide early whether to leave.
“If you stay, your home may not be defendable,” the service said.
