Calvin Christian School in Kingston will build its first purpose-built gymnasium in its 64-year history.
The school has appointed local firm Fairbrother as the builder, with construction beginning in October and completion expected in September 2027.
The gymnasium will have an engineered sports floor built to FIBA standards, the same standard used at the JackJumpers’ High Performance Centre, which Fairbrother also built.
Calvin Christian School principal Scott Ambrose said the project would do more than add a building.
“This is about much more than simply building a gym,” he said.
“It will create new opportunities for our students to participate in sport and physical education, as well as providing a dedicated space for performances, assemblies and community events.”
“Importantly, it will provide a place where our school community can gather, connect and celebrate together.”
The Kindergarten to Year 12 co-educational school is one of four run by Christian Schools Tasmania.
Chief executive David Gillman said the project was an exciting milestone.
“We are incredibly excited to see this long-held vision for Calvin Christian School become a reality,” Gillman said.
“This is an important investment in the school and in the opportunities available to students now and into the future.”
The gymnasium will add to the growing number of courts and sporting facilities in Kingston.
The Tasmania Devils are building a high performance centre in the area for their men’s and women’s teams, as well as the Tasmania JackJumpers and Jewels basketball teams.
The school opened in January 1962 with 77 primary students.
It was funded and built by The Association of Christians.
There are now 80 similar schools across the country.
It now has close to 800 students enrolled.
