A Launceston man was more than twice the legal alcohol limit when police caught him doing a burnout in a city car park, police allege.
Police were watching for dangerous driving in the Launceston CBD on Saturday night when they saw a car lose traction in a Paterson Street car park around 11:30pm.
The driver, a 24-year-old Invermay man, was pulled over and taken to the Launceston Police Station, where he blew 0.126 – more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit.
His car has been clamped for three months. He has been charged with hooning and drink-driving offences and is due in the Launceston Magistrates Court in December.
Inspector Craig Fox said combining alcohol with high-risk driving put the public at risk.
“Police will continue to conduct targeted operations in the Launceston CBD and take action against drivers who put themselves and other road users at risk,” he said.
“Our message is simple – if you drink, don’t drive and if you choose to engage in dangerous driving behaviour, expect to be arrested and your vehicle clamped or seized or, in some cases, destroyed.”
