A car that was involved in a crash that killed a 26-year-old man at Lindisfarne on Thursday night was seen ‘travelling at high speeds’ moments before the accident, Police say.
Patrolling officers reportedly observed the vehicle speeding along the East Derwent Highway just before the crash but did not initiate a pursuit.
“The police unit continued in the same direction as the speeding vehicle and came across the crash scene a short time later, providing initial first aid alongside other witnesses until paramedics arrived,” Southern District Commander Jason Elmer said.
“We are calling for anyone who saw a silver Holden Barina travelling between Ross and Hobart, possibly on the Midland Highway, between 8:30pm and 9:30 pm last night to contact us.”
The crash, which occurred around 9:40pm, saw the Barina reportedly burst into flames shortly after impact.
The driver of the Barina was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Professional Standards are reviewing the accident, alongside crash investigators, who will prepare a report for the coroner.

Tasmanian man killed after serious crash on East Derwent Highway
A serious crash on the East Derwent Highway has claimed the life of a young man after two vehicles collided late Thursday evening.
Emergency services responded to the crash at around 9:40pm last night, which involved a silver Holden Barina and a white Toyota van.
The driver of the Holden Barina, a 26-year-old man from Ross, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the victim has not been released at this time.
The female driver of the Toyota van sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Authorities, including crash investigation services, remain at the accident site as the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision continue.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Traffic on the East Derwent Highway is currently being diverted at Lincoln Street and Boatta Road.
Motorists are advised to follow the designated detour routes and exercise caution in the area to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
