A cat who went missing during his family’s move to the mainland has been found nearly three months later, nursed back to health and flown across Bass Strait to reunite with his owner.

Sir Bruv the Brave disappeared in Old Beach, north of Hobart, on March 19 while his owner was on the road to relocate interstate.

His owner had to continue to the mainland without him.

But he never gave up looking, posting on the Tasmanian Lost Pet Register and resharing the appeal every week.

Almost three months later, on June 4, Bruv was found and taken into the care of Southern Tas Cat Rescue.

His foster carers had seen the Facebook posts and thought they recognised him.

They reached out to his owner, then confirmed it was really him through photos and a microchip scan.

The scan was done with help from Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary’s Feline Fix program and the chip number was a match.

“Lo and behold the number matched to Bruv,” the rescue said.

Just days after being found, Bruv fell seriously ill after months living on the streets.

His owner and foster carers were determined to give him every chance.

“He’d come too far and we were all going to give him every chance to fight,” the rescue said.

Bruv was treated for fleas, ticks, worms and a mycoplasma infection and slowly recovered. On June 28, he made it to the airport and flew to his owner.

The group thanked AHVEC and Vet in the Valley for helping him get well.

“This story shows the importance of microchipping our pets and that anything is possible with persistence, love and care,” it said.

Southern Tas Cat Rescue said it now needs $6,000 to cover vet bills and is asking for donations to keep helping local cats and kittens.
