The Launceston City Council has set aside $1 million to repair a popular walking track at the Cataract Gorge.
The Cataract Walk and Trevallyn Steps track were shut in June after a private retaining wall built on steep terrain above the Cataract Gorge’s Cliff Grounds failed.
Tilt sensors have been installed on the retaining wall if a complete failure were to occur without warning.
In July, City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the Council understood the popularity of the Cataract Walk.

“Given the extremely difficult terrain, and the moisture levels currently in the ground, repair works may be complex and may take several months to complete,” Mayor Garwood said.
A contractor has been appointed to remove the bluestone retaining wall in the coming weeks.
The council aims to save costs by repurposing the bluestone from the wall for other community projects.
