Tasmania’s 14 automated mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras are officially handing out fines as of today, after months of testing.

Transport Minister Michael Ferguson says the presence of the cameras has already led to a decrease in speeds on Tasmania’s roads by handing out speeding fines, and now they’re cracking down on phone and seatbelt usage.

Minister Ferguson said people captured on their phone during the testing period weren’t penalized, but from today, new offenders will receive a $390 fine and 3 demerit points.

“We’re all tempted by it, many of us are guilty of it, but it’s time to stop it,” he said.

“If the additional cameras and the fines serve as a deterrent that is a good thing”.
