Fire investigators have ruled a fire that tore through part of a Midway Point home yesterday accidental.

Several fire crews were called to the address on Heron Crescent just before 3pm on Thursday after reports the house was ablaze.

Acting District Officer Adam Salter said investigations have since revealed the fire was likely started by a child playing with matches.

It destroyed a garage, the family car and caused damage to the nearby house.

“While the fire destroyed some of the occupants’ belongings, the outcome could have been far more tragic,” he said.

“This incident shows just how important it is to ensure matches and lighters are stored out of the reach and sight of children.”

All occupants managed to escape the fire without injury.

Salter said the incident serves as a reminder to have working smoke alarms fitted and to have a family escape plan that is discussed regularly.

“Tasmania Fire Service has a website with fire safety information and resources aimed at children and their families,” he said.

“We encourage all Tasmanian families to check it out to learn about fire safety in a fun and engaging way.”
