Children injured, man critical after horror explosion at Launceston home

A man has been airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition after a horror explosion at a Launceston home this evening.

Emergency services were called to the Kings Meadows property on Janet Street around 5:30pm on Sunday night following reports of an explosion.

Police say the 49-year-old has been left with “extensive burns to his face, body and airways” as a result of the blast.

He was transported to the Launceston General Hospital by ambulance and later rushed to Hobart for specialist treatment.

Three children, including a five-year-old, a nine-year-old and a 17-year-old, were also injured in the incident.

They were taken to Launceston General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released after receiving medical care.

Investigations into the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire are currently underway, however both are believed to be accidental.
