Claremont residents against rezoning land for a potential new 24/7 McDonald’s restaurant on their Main Road have launched a campaign with the hopes of fizzling out the ‘unconfirmed proposal’.

Located just over 300 meters away from KFC at Claremont Plaza, the proposed site is currently home to a mechanics workshop on space that the ‘Protect Claremont’ group say is better suited for new residential homes – not a ‘busy, noisy drive-thru’.

“McDonalds is welcome in Claremont to apply for a suitable commercial site. We need both housing and jobs. There is is a better outcome,” the group said.

Some residents living on Main Road claim they weren’t informed about the possible new restaurant and fear the traffic will become unbearable if the proposal goes ahead.

Glenorchy Mayor Bec Thomas told concerned residents yesterday that “there’s nothing at this time [for them] to actually object to” as the council has not yet received any proposals or rezoning applications for the restaurant.

“There is no proposal before council,” she said.

“In short, there’s nothing at this time to actually object to.”

”It may not even get to that point.”

Currently, there are two nearby McDonald’s restaurants in Moonah and Bridgewater.
