Clarence City Councilor Jade Darko has welcomed the adoption of a motion to condemn an incident of transphobic vandalism as a hate based targeted attack on a minority group.
The motion was put presented to address the vandalism of a memorial for trans woman Marjorie Harwood, which was defaced with graffiti last month.
Marjorie died in 2018 after allegedly being raped in Hobart’s Risdon Prison.
Harwood was placed in the men’s section of the prison after being jailed for theft offences in 2017.

Marjorie was later hospitalised after she was raped by five men, which resulted in her requiring a colostomy bag.
Councilor Darko says she hopes the motion will encourage an LGBTQIA+ working group established by the council to pursue more inclusive initiatives.
“My hope is that a motion like this will empower those groups to come forward with some bold new ideas on what we can do to foster inclusion and to demonstrate that that hate is not something that we accept here,” she told ABC
