A disqualified motorcyclist who passed away after crashing his bike in suburban Hobart in 2020 was “heavily affected by both alcohol and cannabis,” a Coroner has found.
Andrew McKenna was riding on Augusta Road at Lenah Valley when he crossed to the wrong side, clipped a gutter and hit a power pole.
Coroner Simon Cooper said McKenna “suffered catastrophic injuries” after crashing his motorcycle about an hour after Police gave him a direction to leave the Salamanca area.
“[His injuries] included severe brain damage and multiple pulmonary lacerations, a pneumothorax, peri-vertebral haematoma, fractured ribs and a fracture of the pelvis,” Cooper said.
He died at the scene.
Coroner Cooper said that the weather, the “well maintained” motorcycle and road conditions did not play a role in causing or contributing to the crash.
As a result, no recommendations were made.
