More than 180,000 Tasmanians have returned their ballots in the state’s local government elections, with just over a week left to vote.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) said it had received 180,770 postal votes or 42.7% of the total across the state’s 29 councils as of Friday.

From today, the tally will also include ballot packs returned to council offices and votes cast through the assisted phone voting service.

With the new school term starting today, the TEC is urging families returning from holidays to check their letterboxes and return their ballots as soon as possible.

“With the school holidays wrapping up, we want Tasmanians to make returning their vote a priority,” Electoral Commissioner Andrew Hawkey said.

Hawkey said voters could still return their ballots by post but should allow enough time for delivery.

Completed ballot papers must reach the TEC by 2pm on Tuesday, October 27.

Voting in local government elections is compulsory for everyone on the state electoral roll, with elections conducted entirely by postal ballot.
