Independent Braddon MP Craig Garland has ruled out backing a minority Liberal government in the new parliament, confirming he will not provide confidence and supply.
Instead, he is throwing his support behind Labor, which he says is the “only party capable” of forming a stable government.
In a statement this morning, Garland said he had phoned Premier Jeremy Rockliff to let him know he would not be signing any agreement.
He pointed to the Liberals’ handling of the Macquarie Point stadium project and what he called a “disastrous, wholly unsustainable budget” as key reasons for his stance.

“Since calling the election, the premier and his party have refused to acknowledge our dire financial situation or the deeply flawed way they have attempted to push through the stadium project,” he said.
Garland also cited today’s Marinus Link decision as proof the government has not changed its ways, despite its promises.

“It was rushed, secretive and emblematic of a government that has learned nothing. The same arrogance, lack of transparency, incompetence and dishonesty continue to define this administration,” he said.
“I will not waste my time or Mr Rockliff’s by entering into any formal negotiations with him, which is why I called him this morning to tell him as much.”
“I also believe it is important to be upfront with the Tasmanian people about this.”
Garland, who backed Labor’s no-confidence motion in the previous parliament that triggered the early election, said the party was his preferred option.

“At this stage, I believe the only party capable of delivering stable and responsible government is the Labor Party,” Garland said.
“I look forward to continuing discussions with Mr Winter.”
