A suspicious fire has torn through the Derwent Valley Men’s Shed in New Norfolk overnight, the latest in a string of suspected arson attacks in the area.

The building is reported to have sustained damage to the exterior walls and roof, with firefighters from New Norfolk, Magra and Bridgewater extinguishing the blaze before it reached inside.

Another fire was reported to emergency services in the hours prior to the Blair Street incident, when flames were seen at the old racecourse on Kensington Street around 7:30am.

Police said the racecourse building, which was vacant at the time, was significantly damaged.

“The cause of both fires is currently under investigation, but police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the fires, or anyone acting suspiciously in the areas at the time of the incidents,” a spokesperson said.

“Anyone with information should contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers Tasmania at crimestopperstas.com.au or on 1800 333 000. You can stay anonymous.”
