Tasmanians in the north of the state will soon have access to a brand new $90 million mental health precinct, with the state government revealing concept plans for the facility.

The Northern Mental Health Precinct at 52 Frankland Street in Launceston will provide a range of acute and community-based mental health services, including immediate support, brief interventions, education and assistance.

Health Minister Guy Barnett said the precinct is part of the government’s “significant investment” into mental health services.

“It is a priority of our government to create a person-centred, adaptable and flexible mental health system that allows all Tasmanians to access the services that best suit their needs,” he said.

The precinct will feature welcoming community spaces, consulting rooms and a five-bed Short Stay Unit on the lower floors, while a 30-bed dedicated urgent care inpatient ward will be built across two upper floors.

An above-ground link-bridge will connect the precinct to the Launceston General Hospital.

“The project will include a link-bridge to connect the new Mental Health Precinct with the Launceston General Hospital,” Barnett said.

“Importantly, the concept designs have been developed in consultation with people with lived experience and mental health service providers.”

Subject to approval, demolition of the existing buildings on the site is scheduled for the first half of 2025, with construction to follow in the second half.
