Devonport residents can now access their local library outside traditional opening hours as part of a new seven-day service initiative launched this week.
The Open Library Access trial extends operating hours from 7am to 9pm daily, allowing community members to swipe themselves in to use library facilities during unstaffed periods.
Minister for Education Jo Palmer said the initiative aims to accommodate those with busy schedules and commitments.
“Our libraries are the lifeblood of our regions and this innovative self-service model allows the community to visit the library at their convenience, providing greater flexibility and accessibility,” Palmer said.

The expanded access forms part of a broader approach to community services, with similar extended hours already operating successfully at Penguin Library.
Library staff will continue to be available during standard opening hours, with the extended access providing supplementary self-service options.

To access the new service, library members aged 18 and over must complete an induction session before being able to use their library cards for entry during extended hours.
Security has been a key consideration in implementing the program, with upgraded CCTV, security systems, duress alarms, sensor lights and cameras installed to ensure visitor safety during unstaffed periods.
“Extended opening hours provide flexibility for our community members and support our commitment to lifting literacy and lifelong learning,” Palmer said.
Community members interested in the Open Library Access program can find additional information and book induction sessions through the Libraries Tasmania website.
