A Devonport man who was forced to ‘swerve violently’ to avoid crashing into a parked car late last night was more than three and a half times the legal alcohol limit, police say.

Officers on patrol in the William Street area on Saturday just before 10pm witnessed the 30-year-old man take evasive action to avoid the smash.

The driver was pulled over shortly after and allegedly assaulted the officers before being taken into custody.

Police said the man had a breath analysis reading of 0.181, leading to charges of high range drink driving, driving under the influence and disqualified driving.

He is scheduled to appear before the Devonport Magistrates Court today.

“Anyone who witnessed a red Toyota utility driving erratically in the Devonport and Spreyton area is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at crimestopperstas.com.au, quoting ESCAD 460-13042024,” police said.

“Information can be provided anonymously.”
