A Devonport woman was caught driving at more than four times the legal blood alcohol limit during a 45-minute police blitz in East Devonport on Friday afternoon.

Police intercepted 165 motorists on Brooke Street, carrying out 165 breath tests, six oral fluid drug tests and detecting one vehicle defect.

The 28-year-old woman returned a breath alcohol reading of 0.189 while driving to work.

She was hit with an immediate 12-month licence disqualification and will be called to front the Devonport Magistrates Court at a later date.

A 45-year-old Port Sorell man was also caught drug driving during the operation and will be called to appear at the same court.

Acting Sergeant Samantha Hardy said there is no excuse for driving while impaired.

“Every person who gets behind the wheel has a responsibility to keep themselves and others safe,” she said.

“Driving under the influence remains one of the leading contributors to serious and fatal crashes and police will continue to conduct targeted operations to prevent dangerous behaviour on our roads.”
