A driver has allegedly fallen asleep at the wheel and drifted into the path of oncoming traffic, narrowly avoiding a crash in Tasmania’s north.

The near miss on the Batman Highway at Hillwood was captured on dashcam and sent to police through the ‘Enough is Enough’ dangerous driving portal.

Police allege the driver nodded off and crossed double centre lines into oncoming traffic.

The driver will be proceeded against by summons.

It happened near the scene of a recent fatal crash in similar circumstances.

“A moment of fatigue can have devastating consequences,” police posted on social media.

Police said fatigue was one of the ‘Fatal Five’, the main causes of fatal and serious crashes, which police in the north have been targeting this week.

Highways between 2pm and 6pm on Friday afternoons had been the “highest-risk” time and place for fatal and serious crashes in the north over the past five years, police said.

“If you’re tired, stop and take a break,” police said. “No destination is worth risking a life.”
