A driver has been charged after allegedly being caught travelling at 141km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Huon Highway, with a police officer saying he heard the car before he saw it.

Police said the unregistered car was detected travelling at 141km/h at Grove, south of Hobart, around dusk on Monday.

Officers stopped the car shortly afterwards and arrested the driver, a 26-year-old Moonah man.

Constable Smart said he heard the car before he saw it.

“I had only just set up when I heard the vehicle approaching at high speed,” he said.

“The road noise from the tyres indicated that it was travelling at an extreme speed, but I was still shocked and appalled when it was detected at 141km/h.”

Smart said there was other traffic on the road at the time, with wildlife also active in rural areas around dusk.

“This driver was placing himself and every other road user at significant risk,” he said.

The car, which belongs to the man’s employer, was seized for three months.

The man is expected to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court in February 2027.

Smart said police would continue to target “high-risk drivers who show no regard for the safety of others”.

“Drivers should expect to see police anywhere, at any time,” he said.
