A driver was caught going nearly twice the speed limit through the heart of Launceston while it was raining on Friday night.

Police allegedly clocked the white Volkswagen Golf doing 77km/h in a signed 40km/h zone along George Street just after 10pm on June 19.

The 40-year-old man from Newstead was stopped by police during a targeted operation in the Launceston CBD focused on hooning.

He was fined $615 and lost 5 demerit points, but came close to losing his licence altogether.

He was just 1km/h below the speed that triggers an automatic three-month disqualification.

Tasmania Police urged motorists to slow down and adjust to the conditions.

“Always obey speed limits and drive to the conditions,” police said.

“Police could be down the road or around the next corner, so always drive responsibly to help look after everyone on our roads.”
