A young driver who told police he was running late for work will lose his licence for four months after allegedly being caught driving at 107km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Police said the 21-year-old man was detected travelling at nearly twice the speed limit on Berriedale Road in Hobart’s northern suburbs on Wednesday morning.

In a social media post, Tasmania Police asked: “Do you think getting stuck in road works is an excuse to speed?”, adding: “Apparently one driver did!”

As well as the four-month disqualification, the man’s vehicle will be clamped for three months and he will be fined $1,224.75.

“There are no excuses for speeding,” police said.

“Speeding is one of the fatal five causes of fatal and serious crashes on our roads.”

“Please slow down to help everyone get to their destinations safely.”
