Dramatic dashcam footage has captured the moment a drunk Hobart driver rolled his vehicle on the Tasman Bridge overnight – and then ran away.
The crash happened shortly before 11pm on Thursday as the 4×4 entered the bridge from the Domain Highway.
Video obtained by Pulse shows the unregistered 1990 Nissan Patrol sliding across four lanes, narrowly missing other vehicles, before coming to a stop on the opposite side of the bridge.
Motorists and a well-timed ambulance immediately rushed to help the 27-year-old Lauderdale man, who was clambering out of the overturned vehicle.
“Are you ok?” one driver can be heard asking the man, who replied “Yep, all good”, before sprinting off down the highway towards the city.
The incident reduced city-bound traffic to a single lane and the bridge to 40km/h while officers worked to clear the scene.
A Police spokesperson told Pulse the man didn’t get far, as officers caught up with and arrested him a short distance down the road.
After testing, the man returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.113 – 2.26x the legal limit.
He is now facing charges for crash and failed to stop and driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.
Earlier this year a similar rollover occurred involving a truck, which saw the bridge closed for several hours.
