Hundreds of motorists lined up for a rare opportunity to purchase fuel for under a dollar per litre at a new service station in northern Tasmania today.
Tas Petroleum slashed unleaded and diesel prices to 99.9 cents per litre at their new Legana site near Launceston, offering temporary relief amid cost of living pressures.
Some drivers waited over 30 minutes in queues that formed quickly after the promotion began at 1pm, with the special pricing continuing until 5:30pm as part of the station’s grand opening celebrations.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, praised the Tasmanian-owned business.

“We often see the big brands. But here at Tas Petroleum, we’ve got a local Tasmanian family. All Tasmanian owned. Employing Tasmanian people,” Rockliff said.
The premier said his own family even tried to take advantage of the rare offer.

“My daughter wanted me to go and pick up her car and bring it here and then take it back to her with 99 cents a litre of fuel,” he said.
“I’m not sure I’ll have the time to do that given the amount of people lined up today, which is fantastic.”
The company described attendance at the opening as “pretty overwhelming”, with festivities running from 10am to 2pm alongside the fuel promotion.
