A young justice studies student was drunk, using her mobile phone and driving an unregistered car in a crash that could have claimed her life, a court has heard.
20-year-old Lucy Rose Waud rolled her car multiple times in April this year after she crossed to the wrong side of the road and collided with an embankment.
In the Launceston Magistrates Court, Waud pleaded guilty to charges of using a handheld mobile phone, driving while exceeding the alcohol limit and driving an unregistered motor vehicle.
Waud claimed to have gotten behind the wheel because she ‘felt uncomfortable and unsafe’ after drinking at a tavern and decided to drive instead of waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up.
Waud admitted to consuming at least four drinks and being on her phone during the crash, with a blood alcohol test revealing a reading of 2.14x the legal limit shortly after the incident.
The part-time barista, who had no prior offences, was given a minimum six-month disqualification from driving and a $1,000 fine.
