The 24-year-old was first pulled over in St Helens on Sunday morning, where he returned a breath analysis reading of 0.102.

He was issued an immediate disqualification notice, but allegedly got behind the wheel again that afternoon.

Police said when the man was stopped again just hours later, while intoxicated and driving disqualified, a second breath test returned 0.146, more than three times the legal limit.

Police believe the man was actively drinking while he was driving the car.

A 60-year-old woman is also facing charges for driving while intoxicated on the coast on Saturday.

She initially failed a breath test after being stopped for speeding in Beaumaris, returning a reading of 0.153 – three times the legal limit.

Inspector Luke Manhood said both drivers will appear in court.

“Drink and drug driving are significant contributing factors to serious and fatal crashes and police will not tolerate this behaviour,” he said.

“We are actively targeting drink drivers and we urge people to remember that drink driving operations can be conducted anywhere, at anytime.”
