Tasmania will roll out a $10 million voucher initiative this winter, aimed at injecting life into the state’s hospitality and tourism sectors during the traditionally quiet period.
The ‘Eat Local, Stay Local’ scheme will distribute 100,000 vouchers worth $100 each to Tasmanians through a ballot system starting June 2.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the program serves a dual purpose of supporting local businesses while easing the financial burden on residents.
“Tassie is a little quieter during the winter months and so it’s important that we encourage Tasmanians, through the voucher scheme, to be able to explore the wonderful food, beverage, accommodation, visitor experiences right across Tasmania,” he said.

“We’re very fortunate in Tasmania we do have four distinct seasons across the 12 months and so winter is a great time to come to Tasmania and experience that wonderful warm hospitality.”
Dane Layton, owner of Drift Café on the north-west coast, said the colder months are always tough for businesses like his, with trade dropping “about 50 to 60%” compared to summer.

“That has flow-on effects of reduced staffing and less money flowing around in the community,” he said.
The Tasmanian Hospitality Association has thrown its full support behind the scheme, with CEO Steve Old saying winter is “always a challenge”.
“It’s not just about encouraging people to dine out or book a weekend away,” he said.
“It’s about keeping the lights on and tills ticking across our hospitality sector through the cooler months.”
While the full list of participating businesses is yet to be released, it will include accommodation providers, hospitality venues and tourist attractions throughout the state.
