Unusual cloud formations resembling flying saucers have hovered over Hobart this afternoon, sending social media into overdrive.
The smooth, layered shapes were spotted across the city, with locals sharing photos of the striking display.

The formations are known as lenticular clouds, most likely a type called altocumulus lenticularis.
They form when stable, moist air flows over hills or mountains, creating waves in the atmosphere.
Moisture condenses near the crest of those waves, producing the distinctive stacked or lens-shaped clouds that can look remarkably like UFOs.

Despite strong winds higher in the atmosphere, lenticular clouds can remain almost stationar.
