Tasmania Police have charged eight people with counterfeit money offences in the state’s north, prompting a warning for people to carefully check their cash.
A 22-year-old Invermay man was charged with multiple offences last week as part of ongoing investigations into fake currency circulating in the area.
Detective Acting Inspector Aziz Melick said seven other individuals have also been proceeded against for similar offences during August.
“Police remind the community that it is an offence to possess, buy, sell and use counterfeit money,” Melick said.

Authorities say that while some counterfeit notes may appear legitimate at first glance, many contain obvious flaws that careful inspection would reveal.
Some counterfeit notes have the word ‘PROPS’ printed on them.

Police are urging the public to be vigilant when handling cash and to check both sides of notes, verify the security window feature is legitimate, and look for inconsistencies in thickness and colour.
“If you’re handling cash – please be vigilant and check notes to prevent falling victim to these offences,” said Melick.
Members of the public who identify suspected counterfeit notes are asked to contact police on 131 444 and provide any relevant information, including CCTV footage if possible.
