A man has been charged with arson after he allegedly lit multiple fires across Kingston, including a blaze that left an elderly woman hospitalised, earlier this month.

The 37-year-old from the Huon Valley is accused of lighting fires that caused a total of around $100,000 in damages on April 6.

Police said the deliberately lit fires caused a 77-year-old woman to be sent to the Royal Hobart Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Her injuries were minor and she was able to be released that morning.

The man appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of arson and unlawfully setting fire to property.

“Police believe there are further witnesses who may be able to assist police with these matters,” a spokesperson said.

“They are encouraged to contact the Kingston Criminal Investigation Branch or Crimestoppers and reference offence report 740211.”
