New technology is now patrolling Glenorchy streets, detecting vehicles that overstay time limits or park illegally in loading zones and no-parking areas.
Glenorchy City Council is extending the automated Aero Ranger camera system for another year after a successful trial.
The system uses vehicle-mounted cameras to photograph number plates and log locations as patrol cars move through the municipality.
When a vehicle breaches parking restrictions, officers receive a digital alert.
The council said the six-month trial had lifted compliance and improved officer safety, prompting the 12-month extension.
Mayor Sue Hickey said the system had proven more efficient than traditional enforcement methods.
“Aero Ranger allows our officers to cover more ground with greater accuracy, which means better compliance and a fairer outcome for everyone using our parking spaces,” she said.
The cameras monitor time-limited spaces and detect vehicles in no-standing areas, replacing the manual chalking of tyres.
Hickey said this had reduced the risk of repetitive strain injuries among parking inspectors.
“It’s also helping us deliver services more efficiently while supporting staff wellbeing,” she said.
The technology has also been used to assist police with vehicle searches and has streamlined parking occupancy surveys, providing clearer data for future planning.
The council said parking coverage had improved significantly across the area, ensuring fairer access to high-demand spaces.
Hickey said the program highlighted how councils could modernise services.
“This is a great example of how smart innovation can improve service delivery and community outcomes,” she said.
The extension follows the completion of the initial trial, which began in May. The council will review the program again in 12 months.
