The speed limit on a 2km section of the Channel Highway south of Hobart will become 10km/h slower from next week.

The Commissioner for Transport has approved a change in the speed limit for a stretch of the highway between Huntingfield and Margate, decreasing it from 90km/h to 80km/h.

“The new speed limit will bring this section of the highway in line with the existing 80km/h speed limits at either end, providing greater consistency and reducing the potential for confusion by too many speed limit changes along a section of road,” the Commissioner said.

“The reduction is expected to add 10 seconds to current travel times through this section.”

The change will be implemented from the north of the Rays Court junction near Huntingfield to the south of the Fehres Road junction at Margate, including the intersection of Howden Road with the Channel Highway.

The request to lower the speed limit came from members of the community.

Current speed limit signs will soon be replaced and temporary ‘New speed limit ahead’ signs will be added from Monday, January 22.
