The Fairbrother Foundation has pledged $1 million to support Tasmania’s planned Cancer Wellness Centre.

The funding injection is a major boost to the $24 million project set to begin construction this year.

The donation will directly support building the facility near Royal Hobart Hospital, which will provide emotional support and accommodation for cancer patients and their families.

SHE chair Scott Harris said the contribution was a powerful vote of confidence in the project.

The wellness centre will be located at the former Theatre Royal Hotel in Hobart

“This is an incredibly generous commitment from the Fairbrother Foundation and one that will make a real and lasting difference for Tasmanians affected by cancer,” Harris said.

“The Cancer Wellness Centre is about wrapping care around people at one of the most difficult times in their lives and this support brings us significantly closer to turning that vision into reality.”

Fairbrother Group’s Paul Ransley and Phil DeJong said the company was proud to support the project.

“The work SHE is doing is deeply important and the Cancer Wellness Centre will fill a gap that so many families experience during cancer treatment,” they said.

“This is about supporting people, not just through treatment, but through the emotional and practical challenges that come with it.”

Fairbrother Foundation chair Gaye Rutherford said the decision reflected the foundation’s commitment to meaningful community projects.

“We were inspired by Scott’s vision for the Centre and the impact it will have for people across the state,” Rutherford said.

The centre will complement existing clinical services by offering wellbeing programs and psychosocial support.

It will also provide accommodation for patients and families travelling from regional areas.

The facility is hoped to open in late 2027 or early 2028, with the state government having already committed $10 million.
