A $9 million overhaul of a notorious intersection in Hobart’s northern suburbs is nearing completion, with new traffic lights set to be switched on within weeks.
Works at the Brooker Highway intersection with Foreshore Road and Duncan Street at Montrose are running to schedule, the Department of State Growth says, with an April finish line in sight.
Crews are now resurfacing and line-marking the intersection, while traffic lights are being connected ahead of extensive testing.
“The project is currently on-schedule and is expected to be completed in April 2026, subject to suitable weather conditions and the successful commissioning of the traffic lights,” a department spokesperson told Pulse.

The intersection has long been a safety concern.
Parents collecting children from nearby Montrose Bay High School must navigate traffic crossing two lanes of the city’s busiest highway.

A history of crashes prompted the state government to install traffic signals and new pedestrian crossings at the site.
The upgrade comes as motorists endure temporary restrictions introduced in January.
Right turns from both Duncan Street and Foreshore Road onto the Brooker Highway remain banned until the lights go live.
The project remains on budget and is jointly funded by both the state and federal governments through the Tasmanian Road Safety Levy and the Australian Government Road Safety Program.

The new signals will be synchronised with other Brooker Highway intersections to keep traffic flowing.
Night works between 7pm and 5am have minimise delays during peak periods, with lanes reopening by 6:30am each morning.
The intersection also serves the Montrose Bay Foreshore Park and provides a pedestrian link to MyStateBank Arena.
