A Victorian couple remains in hospital with serious injuries after the car they were travelling in slammed into a power pole next to the Bass Highway on Tuesday.
The pair, a 67-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman, veered off the road at Port Latta around 2pm yesterday.
The crash caused the power pole to fall and start a grass fire, which spread to nearby scrub – and also knocked out power to thousands of nearby properties.
Witnesses reportedly rushed to pull the couple from the vehicle as the fire spread, despite a high-voltage power line having fallen on it.
“Early investigations indicate fatigue was a factor in the crash,” police said.
They said there was no risk to the public or structures in the area.
“Police would like to thank staff from Grange Resources for assisting with the initial medical response and members of the public for their assistance and patience during the incident.”
