A busy Launceston city street has been shut this afternoon after a fire started at a local laundry business.

York Street, between Charles Street and St John Street, has been closed after the fire broke out at George’s Dry Cleaners shortly after 3:30pm on Sunday.

The Tasmania Fire Service say multiple crews are on the scene and are actively working to contain the blaze.

The full extent of the fire and its cause is currently unknown.

Updated 6:30pm, Sunday 3 December: Tasmania Police have confirmed that the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

York Street has now reopened following the blaze, while the cause remains under investigation.

The total amount of damage caused by the fire is unknown.
