A “charred” but miraculously surviving small kitten rescued in the aftermath of the recent Dolphin Sands Bushfires is now living a happy life with the firefighter who saved her.

Kym Manten from the Tasmania Fire Service was in the process of cleaning up the area after the devastating blaze that destroyed two homes and burnt over 220 hectares when he and his crew were drawn to the sound of “small cries”.

It was at that moment they discovered the kitten, alone in the sand, slightly charred and “very unhappy”.

Manten immediately doused the kitten in water to cool her down and clean her before taking her home with him.

The kitten was given a much-needed bath and some food before his wife, Deb, soon realised that the kitten required more love and attention from them before going to a shelter.

“Those extra days of care turned into a permanent situation and ‘Smokie’ is now settling into her new fur-ever home with Kym and Deb,” the TFS said.

The Mantens describe Smokie as a ‘happy, playful and content’ little kitty.
