Parts of Hobart have been struck by a sudden hailstorm this afternoon, with the Brooker Highway briefly transformed into an icy scene.
The hail hit northern suburbs including New Town, Moonah and Glenorchy around 1:45pm, coating roads and footpaths in white as pedestrians took cover.
The Bureau of Meteorology reported the hailstorm moved in a southwesterly direction across the city, followed by thunder.
BOM Forecaster Ellie Mathews said today’s weather has seen snow fall to unusually low elevations.

“These showers are quite cool, bringing … snow flurries to low-lying areas, but showers are going to continue for much of today,” Mathews told Local Radio.
“We have heard some reports of snow flurries in parts of the south, even as low as 400m at places such as Allens Rivulet and Fern Tree.”

The sudden burst of wintry weather comes amid a forecast high of just 14 degrees for Hobart today, with the BOM having warned of possible small hail throughout the day.
Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate further tomorrow as a cold front moves across Tasmania.
The BOM has forecast very high chances of showers for both Wednesday and Thursday in Hobart, with Thursday potentially seeing between 3 and 15 millimetres of rainfall.
