“Knee deep and rising”: People in Tasmania’s north east are on flood watch this afternoon as the BOM warns of severe thunderstorms for the area.

Residents of St Helens are being urged to be prepared, with heavy rainfall continuing to lash the coast and floodwaters rising to “knee deep” levels.

The SES say a Flood Watch and Act is current for St Helens and surrounds, with floodwaters rising around the Circassian Street, Tasman Highway (Lions Park to St Helens Township / CBD) and St Helens Point Road areas.

The BOM say the thunderstorms are being caused by a “warm and humid onshore flow” in the northeast.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include St Helens and Scamander.”

They say 35mm has fallen in 1 hour to 12:45pm at St Helens Aerodrome.
