Residents in the Huon Valley and Geeveston area south of Hobart have been urged to remain on high alert as the Tasmania State Emergency Service (SES) issues a flood alert.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a moderate flood warning for the Huon River, indicating the potential for flooding in Judbury, Ranelagh, Huonville, Glen Huon, Woodstock, Cradoc, Glaziers Bay, Franklin, Castle Forbes Bay, Port Huon, Geeveston, Lonnavale and the surrounding regions.

The SES has cautioned that nearby streams and rivers are likely to experience flooding, putting low-lying properties at risk of isolation.

“Lives could be at risk from flood waters… Evacuation of some properties may be required,” a spokesperson said.

The SES has emphasised the potential dangers posed by floodwaters and advised residents to avoid walking, playing, riding or driving through flooded areas.

The BOM say the weather forecast indicates a challenging situation in the coming days, with showers, possibly heavy, forecast today in the western areas.

Snowfalls are expected to reach 900 meters in the south during the late evening, with strong and gusty west to northwesterly winds also present.

Tomorrow, the showers will contract to the western and far southern areas in the morning
