The Tasmanian Greens have released footage of greyhound races that shows dogs falling, colliding and finishing races injured, in a renewed push to shut the industry down.

The party obtained the footage under Right to Information laws.

It said the videos covered dozens of previously unpublished races from 2025 and early 2026.

Greens animal rights spokesperson Cassy O’Connor said Tasracing had “hidden” vision of races where falls and injuries occurred.

“In some cases the published videos of races edit around an incident, giving the false impression nothing had happened,” she said.

“This has been part of a deliberate strategy to hide and misrepresent the truth about greyhound racing.”

O’Connor said “barely a week” went by without a dog falling, colliding at high speed or hobbling over the finish line injured.

“This newly revealed footage is so confronting and so extensive that it will only strengthen the opposition to this outdated industry,” she said.

A Tasracing spokesperson said the practice of excluding the incidents from broadcast has been happening for years.

“Tasracing does not believe it should broadcast incidents when racing animals fall or are injured,” they said

“This has been its practice since 2011. The position is based on respect for racing industry participants and their animals. It is not a position restricted to the greyhound code but all codes of racing.”

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the footage was “horrific” and “very challenging” to look at.

“No Tasmanian likes to see any animal distressed or injured,” he said.

The premier said the vision was why the state government wanted to phase out and ban greyhound racing.

“The only thing standing between banning greyhound racing and not is Dean Winter and the Labor Party,” he said.

“I urge all Labor members of the parliamentary team to look at that footage and tell Tasmanians why they will not support a phase out and ban of greyhound racing.”

Labor leader Josh Willie said any animal welfare incidents were “serious” and should be handled with “transparency”.

The government’s bill would end the industry by June 30, 2029.

It passed the House of Assembly in December but has twice stalled in the Legislative Council, where the government needs the support of independents to pass it.
