Tasmania’s first Grill’d burger restaurant has opened in the capital today with a whopper giveaway of 754 free burgers.

The nationwide chain, already with over 170 locations across the mainland, has set up shop on the North Hobart restaurant strip in the building formally home to Lizzie & Lefroy.

The store opened at 10am on Friday to a long line of hungry locals that stretched along the street, eager to try the latest addition to the area’s dining scene.

Grill’d founder and managing director Simon Crowe said the 754 number is a nod to the chain’s first-ever restaurant address on Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn 20 years ago.

“For years we’ve had numerous Tasmanians visit one of our restaurants on the mainland, and for years we’ve been aware of the demand to bring Grill’d to Tassie,” he said.

“We share multiple passions with the people of Tassie, including incredible tasting, healthy food, a focus on sustainability and of course supporting local communities.”

The new North Hobart restaurant will create around 50 to 60 new jobs, Crowe said.

“We’re incredibly proud to be opening our new restaurant here and create 50-60 direct employment opportunities and welcome these legends to our passionate restaurant team,” he said.
