Residents in South Hobart have been left shocked and disturbed after a walker discovered the head of a wallaby impaled on a stick and mounted on a tree along a popular track near the Molle St entrance of the Hobart Rivulet.
The head appeared to be decomposing and the jaw was wrapped in plant material to hold the stick in place.
The cause of the animal’s death remains unknown.
This is not the first instance of animal cruelty in the area, with the same resident reporting a similar incident near the Wynyard St entrance about a year ago.
The resident believes that installing CCTV cameras in the area could prevent further acts of cruelty.
Penalties for those found guilty of harming animals can include fines imposed by a court, according to the RSPCA.
