Strong winds are forecast across parts of Tasmania on Friday and Saturday, with gusts potentially reaching more than 120km/h in elevated areas of the state’s south.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds across southern, eastern and elevated parts of the state.
Winds are expected to strengthen from sunrise on Friday, particularly over higher ground and exposed parts of the south-west coast.
Average winds of 55 to 65km/h are forecast, with peak gusts around 100km/h in some areas.
The stronger winds are expected to spread east during the day, reaching Hobart and lower-lying eastern areas from late afternoon before easing by around midnight.
Elevated areas could continue to see strong winds into Saturday morning, with conditions expected to ease across the warning area by midday.
Swansea, New Norfolk, Hobart, Bicheno, Orford and Geeveston are among the towns covered by the warning.
The State Emergency Service (SES) says strong winds can bring down trees and powerlines and cause loose outdoor items to become airborne.
People are being urged to secure loose items, park vehicles away from trees where possible and keep an eye on conditions.
A colder change is then forecast for Sunday, with showers expected to fall as snow above 1,000 metres in some parts of the state.
