Hobart’s Blackmans Bay Beach has been hit with a warning for swimmers after high levels of Enterococci were detected in recent water sampling at the middle section of the beach.
The Kingborough Council has advised that swimming is not recommended until further notice, erecting signs along the beach to alert swimmers of the potentially dangerous situation.
While the council has always discouraged swimming in the Derwent for two days after heavy rain for health and safety reasons, they say never swim near stormwater pipes or urban rivulets.
One beachgoer said when she walked along the beach on Friday, all she could smell was “something bad like sewerage around the skate park, so gross.”
The Council has urged all beach-goers to be vigilant and follow the warning signs until further notice.
