Heartbreaking scenes as wildlife found clinging to trees in Dolphin Sands bushfire

An unknown number of wildlife are believed to have lost their lives in the Dolphin Sands bushfire on Tasmania’s east coast.

Heartbreaking images from inside the evacuation area show animals that were desperate to escape the inferno clinging to trees.

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary say most animals that become stuck in a hot bushfire are simply ‘unable to survive’.

Director Greg Irons told Pulse that those fortunate enough to make it out will likely suffer burns on their feet from hot coals as they attempt to find their way home.

He said fewer animals in fire-affected areas can be rescued than people might realise and described the situation as ‘horrific’.

Efforts are currently underway to rescue impacted wildlife, with Pulse currently working with Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary to arrange for a veterinarian to be escorted in.
