The Bicheno Golf Club is reeling after a recent break-in that saw the club’s safe cleaned out.

Club president Peter Wight says “a substantial” amount of money was taken overnight on Thursday, June 22, with the funds serving a variety of purposes for the club, including the bar float, tour money, and gift cards given out as trophies on Saturdays.

White says it appears the offenders specifically targeted the safe, entering the club through a window that was usually covered by a noticeboard.

Photos posted on Facebook by club captain Peter Bajzelj showed the door of the safe had been ripped off its hinges, with large amounts of dust found throughout the office area.

The clean-up operation, which involved six people and took between four and five hours, had to be carried out due to the dust having spread far beyond the office area and into several electronic devices such as computers and printers.

Mr Wight expressed concern for the safety of the perpetrators, saying they “would have breathed in heaps of it”.

“It came fully under the door into the rest of the club. Every table and surface was covered in this dust.”

Police have been informed and are investigating the incident.

The Bicheno Golf Club committee is urging anyone who saw anything suspicious at the club between 6 pm on Thursday, June 22 and 10 am on Friday, June 23, to contact the club or Bicheno Police.

Mr Wight had some strong words for the perpetrators, urging them to ‘give themselves up’ and give the club its money back.

“The amount of money is not worth the risk of going to jail. It’s just ridiculous.”
